Last night, in Piazza Duomo in Grosseto, reigning Italian lightweight champion Francesco Acatullo (18-13-4, 4 KOs) defended his title against challenger Davide Carpentieri (6-2-3, 6 KOs).
Acatullo retained his belt thanks to an excellent display of maturity and technical ability. His hand speed and outstanding timing stood out throughout the contest, allowing him to capitalize on the openings left by his opponent. It was an authoritative performance, reflected by a unanimous decision with scores of 97-93, 97-93, and 96-94—a verdict that was never truly in doubt despite the positive moments produced by Carpentieri.
Experience versus power. The 38-year-old Acatullo, a veteran of the Italian boxing scene, faced a much younger opponent in the 24-year-old Carpentieri, who, despite still developing as a boxer, had demonstrated heavy hands by recording knockouts in each of his six victories.
At the opening bell, Acatullo came out aggressively, using his jab to set up his right hook. His hands immediately began firing at impressive speed, perhaps catching Carpentieri by surprise. From the second round onward, however, Davide took control of the center of the ring. He generally prefers to press forward and fight at close range, where he can unleash hooks and uppercuts.
Carpentieri found himself facing a stylistically opposite opponent. Acatullo is a well-rounded boxer, capable of managing every phase of a fight with fast combinations and excellent timing. Although he is not known as a powerful puncher, he is highly effective in exchanges thanks to his accuracy and technical precision.
Despite Carpentieri’s constant pressure, Francesco defended well and repeatedly countered with success thanks to his superior hand speed.
Davide initially appeared tense, but from the third round onward he settled into the fight and engaged in fierce exchanges at close quarters. Both men traded with intensity. Carpentieri landed some impressive uppercuts, while Acatullo responded with sharp, effective hooks that shook Davide on several occasions, as the challenger focused heavily on offense while neglecting his defense.
Carpentieri also did solid work to the body, although he consistently left himself too exposed, allowing Acatullo to find his face with counterpunches.
Despite the difficulties, Carpentieri seemed to grow stronger as the fight progressed. Through the middle rounds, he continued attacking the body while mixing in straight rights and hooks to the head. Nevertheless, Acatullo’s counter hooks remained a constant threat, repeatedly rocking the young Roman fighter.
The difference in experience became increasingly evident. Acatullo maneuvered around the ring with veteran savvy, using the ropes to catch his breath before firing precisely timed hooks that frequently found the challenger’s head. Carpentieri appeared to slow down noticeably in the seventh round.
Despite absorbing heavy shots, Carpentieri continued pressing forward in an attempt to overwhelm an ever-responsive Acatullo. Aware that he was trailing on the scorecards, Davide increased his aggression even further, only to run repeatedly into Acatullo’s left hook.
Carpentieri’s determination was admirable. He continued to land quality punches but never managed to seriously trouble the champion, leaving himself vulnerable to Acatullo’s counters.
The final round was hard-fought and action-packed, with both men landing punches and engaging in numerous clinches, but it did nothing to change the clear direction of a contest whose outcome had long since become evident.
At the final bell, Francesco Acatullo successfully retained the Italian lightweight title by unanimous decision, a verdict that accurately reflected the course of the fight.
