Tyson Fury retires from boxing, at least until the next announcement… In a video posted on social media, the Gipsy King, coming off his double defeat against Oleksandr Usyk which stripped him of the heavyweight title, stated that he intends to hang up his gloves. This is a decision he has expressed several times in the past, only to later retract it.

Fury’s brief message was accompanied by a seemingly odd statement that many fans are questioning in these hours. After announcing his intention to end his career, the British giant added that “Dick Turpin wore a mask.”

The connection between the 18th-century English bandit and boxing isn’t immediately obvious. However, the most plausible interpretation of Fury’s words seems to be that the now-former boxer wanted to criticize the judges of his two fights against Oleksandr Usyk for not awarding him the victory: at least Turpin wore a mask while committing his wrongdoings, while they would have robbed him in plain sight.

In truth, the vast majority of experts and industry professionals have deemed the jury’s decisions in the two fights for the heavyweight title to be correct, and Fury’s complaints suggest that the Gipsy King is unable to accept the verdict of the ring.

Many, starting with former English boxer Carl Froch, are absolutely convinced that this supposed retirement of Fury will turn out to be fake, and that negotiations for a sensational derby against former Olympic champion Anthony Joshua will begin very soon.

We just have to wait and see if the Gipsy King was sincere this time.
