Peter Fury is a highly respected trainer, among other things for his ability to prepare fight plans from a tactical standpoint. His reputation has been further enhanced by the impressive performance Rico Verhoeven delivered against Oleksandr Usyk in a fight that most experts had considered hopeless beforehand.

Inevitably, many people have been wondering what might have happened if former heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury had been trained by his uncle when he faced Usyk. Peter Fury was in Tyson’s corner when he achieved the biggest victory of his career against Wladimir Klitschko, but the two later parted ways. For the two fights he lost against the current king of the heavyweight division, the Gypsy King was trained by Sugar Hill Steward.

Asked about the matter, Peter Fury was not particularly kind to his colleague, openly criticizing the tactical approach Tyson Fury used in those two crucial bouts. Here is what the British trainer told TalkSPORT:

“You are the bigger man. You come in at 20 stone and done all the wrong things. Instead of going forward, [Tyson] stood back. He’s got his team there, I’m not criticising anybody, but his tactics in both fights were all wrong. If we have a welterweight who throws 1000 punches and a heavyweight, is the bigger guy going to do that with him or step in and throw one big shot? They went about it wrong; the strategies were wrong. It doesn’t mean to say Usyk was better than him. You get the wrong tactics and that happens. When you look at the structure of Usyk, if you stand off and try to box an elite boxer who is lighter than you, he will ping you all over the shop.”
