Anthony Joshua was involved in a serious car accident while in Nigeria, where he is currently spending his holidays. According to initial reports from local police, the former heavyweight world champion was sitting in the back seat of the vehicle and reportedly sustained only minor injuries. Tragically, however, two people involved in the same incident lost their lives in the crash.
The accident occurred on the highway connecting Lagos and Ibadan, near the city of Sagamu. The boxer was travelling in a Lexus SUV when, following a tire blowout, the driver lost control of the vehicle, which crashed into a truck parked along the roadside. It has not yet been disclosed which of the two vehicles the victims were traveling in.
Some videos recorded after the crash and already circulating online show Joshua in pain but conscious as he receives first aid and is later taken by a police car to the nearest hospital, where he underwent medical treatment and examinations.
Eddie Hearn, AJ’s longtime promoter, was contacted by the media and admitted that he has not yet been able to get in touch with the boxer, but said he is optimistic about his condition based on what can be seen in the footage recorded at the scene.
Joshua, who ten days ago knocked out Jake Paul in six rounds in a highly talked-about bout broadcast on Netflix, is in the country where his family has its roots to spend his holidays. Boxe Punch will continue to monitor the situation and will update readers should further news emerge regarding the incident and Anthony’s health condition.
