Cristobal Lorente and Nathaniel Collins faced each other again, about five months after their first encounter, to determine who deserved a title shot. Following the draw in their previous bout—arguably a somewhat generous result for the Spaniard—Lorente removed any doubt last night by winning via split decision (this time somewhat generous toward Collins), with the following scorecards: 116–111 for Collins and two scores of 115–112 for Lorente.

At the SSE Hydro Arena in Glasgow, Scotland, with a packed crowd supporting hometown favorite Collins, Lorente found the mental and physical energy to turn around a fight that had been slipping away from him, claiming the WBC Silver featherweight title.

At the opening bell, Collins took the initiative, applying pressure cautiously, clearly aware of Lorente’s danger. Despite their contrasting styles, the two once again proved to be evenly matched.

After a quiet opening round, Collins came out sharper and more aggressive in the second, landing a solid straight left. The Glasgow southpaw repeated the punch several times in this phase, exposing some nervousness and stiffness from the Spaniard.

In response, Lorente became less passive and more active, frequently using his jab and mixing in left hooks at close range.

At this stage, the fight was very balanced, with both boxers moving cautiously and showing little willingness to take risks.

Collins often targeted the body, finding some success, and attempted short-range exchanges that were somewhat messy and ineffective, while Lorente focused on controlling the distance.

Early in the sixth round, Lorente tried to close the gap quickly to attack, but Collins reacted instantly, catching him with a right jab that sent him to the canvas. Lorente got up immediately and resumed pressing forward, though with limited success. Later, during a close-range exchange, an overly confident Collins allowed his opponent to land several punches.

As in their previous fight, Lorente proved more dangerous in chaotic situations. Though not particularly refined or aesthetically pleasing, the Spaniard displayed aggression and toughness that clearly troubled Collins.

Once he regained confidence, Lorente resumed landing jabs and straight shots, keeping his opponent at a safe distance. From the knockdown onward, the 30-year-old from Barcelona took control, managing the fight both at close and long range. In addition to his high work rate and fighting spirit, he showed the ability to handle different phases of the bout intelligently.

Realizing the difficult moment, Collins tried to increase his aggression, but with little effect. Lorente’s offensive output remained significantly higher, and the home fighter struggled to cope with the Spaniard’s two-handed attacks. Collins was too inactive and unresponsive, even in situations that should have favored him, such as close-range exchanges given his reach disadvantage.

The Scotsman showed slight signs of a comeback in the tenth round but failed to be effective, due to Lorente’s good movement and controlling shots. Collins gave it everything in the final round, but the Spaniard moved well, avoided attacks, and responded with his remaining energy, proving more accurate as well.

The verdict—perhaps overly generous toward Collins—rewarded the better fighter on the night, one who overcame adversity with determination and authority, turning the fight around with conviction and willpower.

Now, the doors open for Cristobal Lorente to challenge current featherweight champion, American Bruce Carrington.
