Michael Magnesi left his heart in the ring, fighting valiantly despite the hostile atmosphere at Southampton’s St Mary’s Stadium, but it was not enough. Local favorite Ryan Garner captured the WBC Interim Super Featherweight World Title, earning a unanimous decision after twelve extremely intense rounds. These were the official scorecards that determined the outcome of the Queensberry Promotions event promoted by Frank Warren: 116-112, 118-110 and 119-109, all in favor of Garner.

The British fighter made his intentions clear from the opening bell, setting a relentless pace and repeatedly forcing Magnesi onto the ropes during the first two rounds. The Italian remained composed and responded by trying to land his punches in the few moments allowed by Garner’s suffocating pressure, but he was clearly outworked in terms of volume.

The opportunities for Michael became more frequent in the third round. Although he spent much of the session with his back against the ropes, the Italian found the right timing to catch his opponent on several occasions as furious exchanges unfolded at a rapid pace.

Magnesi performed even better in the fourth round, probably his best of the entire fight. Taking advantage of a temporary drop in Garner’s intensity, he landed the cleaner punches and even managed at times to reverse the roles, forcing his opponent onto the back foot.

Any illusion that Garner had burned through his energy, however, quickly disappeared. The hometown hero opened the fifth round with a thunderous right hand and followed it up with relentless pressure, even if some of his attacks occasionally appeared chaotic and unrefined.

The sixth round was, in a way, the perfect summary of the entire contest. During the first half, whenever Garner gave him room to operate, Magnesi displayed excellent skills and showed that he could comfortably compete with his rival on a technical level. During the second half, however, the Englishman charged forward once again and reimposed his physicality, regaining control of the action.

Unfortunately, things became more difficult for the Italian after the halfway point. Tactically, he appeared increasingly lost, unable to find effective answers to the awkward style of his rugged opponent. Garner took advantage, widening his lead and reaching the peak of his dominance in a brutal ninth round that left Magnesi on the verge of being knocked down.

Michael gritted his teeth and weathered the storm bravely without being overwhelmed. He even managed to mount a commendable response during the early stages of the tenth round. However, the energy spent dealing with an opponent who never stopped coming forward began to take its toll.

Although Garner was also visibly tired and the intensity, accuracy and power of his attacks declined noticeably in the closing rounds, Magnesi no longer had enough fuel left to capitalize and launch a final surge. The Italian therefore had no choice but to finish the fight with dignity.

There was no doubt about the identity of the winner, as reflected by the unanimous verdict, even if the margins varied. Curiously, the narrowest score in Garner’s favor came from British judge Mark Bates, while the widest margin was awarded by Italy’s Guido Cavalleri.

Magnesi, who graciously acknowledged his opponent’s quality by describing him as a true ring warrior after the fight, emerges from this challenge with his head held high despite the defeat. He was dragged into a grueling fight that prevented him from showcasing his best qualities, yet he demonstrated toughness, mental strength and the ability to endure hardship, refusing to be blown away and battling courageously until the final bell.

In a country where many self-proclaimed champions constantly make grand declarations without ever venturing beyond their comfort zone, a boxer like Michael—willing to test himself, accept difficult fights and enter the lion’s den in pursuit of a dream—deserves wholehearted support. He deserves it especially after a defeat, because one thing is certain: regardless of the result, he will always continue to honor our country wherever he fights.
