The knockout loss suffered last Saturday at the hands of heavy underdog Zak Chelli has caused many people to reassess the future prospects of Cuban boxer David Morrell. However, the Cuban has no intention of giving up and has already promised his fans a strong comeback.

Here is what the Caribbean fighter wrote on his Instagram account:

“This does not mean that David Morrell’s career is over. We need to take this as a lesson from everything and move on with more strength. We’ll be back soon and with more news for you. For those who are worried, I’m fine and healthy, thank God. A man is not measured by the times he falls, but the times he gets up. This is the beginning of a new stage, not the end of the race.”

The defeat against Chelli was the second loss of Morrell’s professional boxing career. His first setback had come against David Benavidez in February 2025, but on that occasion the Cuban had only been beaten on points after an exciting battle.

Morrell later edged dangerous Russian puncher Imam Khataev by a very narrow decision in a difficult fight that also saw him hit the canvas. Not everyone agreed with the judges’ verdict that night, although the contest was extremely close and difficult to score.

Zak Chelli stepped in for Callum Smith, who had originally been scheduled to face Morrell at the Co-op Live Arena in Manchester, and was viewed by many analysts as little more than a sacrificial lamb. Contrary to pre-fight expectations, however, the British fighter of Tunisian and Italian descent delivered the performance of his life and knocked Morrell out in the tenth and final round.

We will now see whether Morrell’s defeat proves to be just a temporary setback — perhaps caused by the mistake of underestimating his opponent — or whether the Cuban’s career will ultimately fail to live up to the high expectations that surrounded him when he first entered the professional boxing scene.
