Italy heads into the Boxing Grand Prix with four hopefuls, one for each of the four weight divisions featured in the exciting WBC tournament set to kick off tomorrow in Riyadh. Representing Italy are featherweight Eti Qamili, super lightweight Fiorenzo Priolo, middleweight Giovanni Sarchioto, and heavyweight Davide Brito.
The tournament was created by the WBC in collaboration with Riyadh Season to showcase the talent of rising young boxers and to help new stars emerge on the road to the elite levels of the sport.
Each of the four weight classes will feature 32 fighters from around the world. The round of 32 will take place from April 17 to 20 at the BLVD City Global Theater in Riyadh, with all bouts scheduled for six rounds and streamed live on DAZN, starting at 2:00 p.m. tomorrow.
Draws will not be allowed: if a bout ends with an even score, judges will resort to additional scoring based on which fighter clearly won each round, ensuring that every fight has a declared winner.
The tournament will use the “Open Scoring” system: partial scores will be announced after the second and fourth rounds, giving fighters and their corners the opportunity to adjust strategy accordingly. Instant Replay will also be in effect to correct any refereeing errors in real time.
As of this writing, only the featherweight bracket has been revealed. Italy’s Eti Qamili (14-0-0, 7 KOs) will face Ukrainian Ihor Semonchuk (7-0-0, 6 KOs). We now await the names of the opponents for Priolo, Sarchioto, and Brito, which are expected to be announced very soon.
