The first real test in the professional career of heavyweight Angelo Morejon (7-0-0, 6 KOs), born and raised in Cuba but now based in Italy under the guidance of the skilled coach Emanuele Orlando, is fast approaching. Facing him this Saturday at the Palazzetto dello Sport in Valeggio sul Mincio (Verona, Italy) will be former French champion David Spilmont (16-8-1, 11 KOs), who is coming off five consecutive wins. The bout, organized by Italian Ringside Promotions, will be contested for the WBC Mediterranean Heavyweight Title.
Boxe Punch will be ringside once again, just as we were for two of “El Terrible’s” previous performances. We had the chance to witness the Caribbean giant in action last year during his victories over Bosnia’s Belmin Pasalic (read the report) and Spain’s Miguel Galvan (read the report), providing our analysis and impressions.
Angelo Morejon is an unconventional heavyweight by modern standards. He isn’t particularly heavy (103 kg in his last fight), but he possesses remarkable hand speed and impressive stamina, allowing him to grow stronger as the rounds progress.
To prepare for this first title challenge, Morejon has undergone high-quality sparring sessions, training with some of the top talents in the sport, including Italian standout Guido Vianello, Italy’s amateur boxing star Aziz Abbes Mouhiidine, and promising Croatian heavyweight Luka Pratljacic.
David Spilmont is a southpaw with a somewhat limited arsenal. The Frenchman tends to fight on the back foot, relying on a rather sluggish right jab—more for measuring distance than inflicting damage—before attempting to counter his opponents with a left hook when they step into range.
One of the most noteworthy fights of his career was his all-out war in Manchester in 2021 against the aggressive Croatian brawler Alen Babic. Though Babic won by KO in the sixth round, Spilmont had moments where he came dangerously close to pulling off a major upset. While he may not be a powerhouse, he brings solid experience and has already fought abroad three times, making him an opponent that shouldn’t be underestimated.
For Morejon, it will be crucial not to let his desire to entertain dictate his approach. If he maintains the right distance and capitalizes on his fast and explosive straight punches, he has all the tools to take control of the fight without unnecessary risks, as his boxing skills are significantly superior to those of his opponent.
However, if he chooses to charge forward and engage in a close-range battle looking for a knockout, he could expose himself to unnecessary danger. That said, it wouldn’t be surprising if El Terrible manages to dominate Spilmont with the same authority he has shown against his previous opponents.
This is definitely a fight to watch closely, not only for the action in the ring but also to gain a clearer picture of Morejon’s potential and future prospects. With his talent and skill set, he seems well-equipped to make a name for himself on the international stage.
