Imane Khelif turns professional. The Algerian boxer, after winning the gold medal at the Paris Olympic Games just a few months ago, has decided to make the big leap, leaving the amateur world behind to seek glory in the pro ranks.
Among the most discussed and controversial stories of the recent Olympics was hers, with fierce debates sparked by those who questioned the legitimacy of her participation in the women’s tournament. It’s a complex and intricate affair, with much misinformation spread, confusing the public with distorted and sometimes contradictory reports (read our editorial on the matter here).
After announcing at the end of the Games that she intended to file a complaint against those who attacked her with insults and abuse on social media, Khelif now seems more focused than ever on continuing her athletic journey, as she explained during the specially convened press conference:
“I will soon enter the world of professional boxing, I have many offers. Currently, I have not made up my mind about where I will enter professional boxing. But very soon I will take this step, we as Algerians would like to see our level in the field of professionalism.”
Khelif also announced that a documentary about her successful story is being produced and, once ready, will be released on major international platforms.
We will see how Khelif’s professional career unfolds and what her future opponents will say about the controversies in which she was unfortunately involved.
