Great fight on the horizon for boxing fans! After a long negotiation that was kept hidden from the public through constant denials, a formal agreement for the organization of Benavidez vs Morrell has been reached.
The news was made public by David Benavidez himself, who posted an image of the two boxers on his Instagram account, along with the following words:
“There was a lot of names on the table but I wanted to give my fans the best fight possible. I reached out to David Morrell and his team to make this happen and we got the contract done. This fight really gonna be a banger!!! Two of the best in the division and two titles on the line, Let’s f***ing go! Date & Location to be announced shortly.”
Benavidez rose to international fame by overwhelming one opponent after another in the super middleweight division. His only missteps occurred outside the ring, with two conduct issues costing him his world title (a suspension for recreational cocaine use and a missed weight).
Cuban David Morrell also achieved his biggest successes as a super middleweight. Then both fighters decided to move up to light heavyweight, being pessimistic about the possibility that the unified 168-pound champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez would ever give them the chance to face him.
In their debut at 175 pounds, both Benavidez and Morrell emerged victorious, positioning themselves as potential challengers for the winner of this Saturday’s super match between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitrii Bivol, which will take place in Riyadh and will unify all four light heavyweight world titles.
According to American journalist Mike Coppinger, Benavidez vs Morrell could take place on January 25 in Las Vegas.
