At the PalaPiomba in Silvi Marina, during an event organized by Pugilistica Di Giacomo, local fighter Ivan Guarnieri (11-1-1) defended his Italian welterweight title against Mirko Marchetti (12-9). Guarnieri emerged victorious, retaining his belt after his opponent retired at the end of the sixth round.
The Fight
The opening bell rings. Marchetti adopts a southpaw stance, while Guarnieri keeps his guard very high. The first round unfolds at a slow pace, with both fighters studying each other and trying to establish their distance.
From the outset, the fighter from Lazio takes control of the center of the ring, while Guarnieri waits patiently, carefully observing his opponent’s movements.
Both boxers come out with greater conviction and determination in the second round. Guarnieri continues to adopt a cautious approach but lands a fine straight right counter, while Marchetti keeps occupying the center of the ring and tries to apply pressure.
In the third round, the challenger continues to pressure the champion, frequently throwing his straight left, but Guarnieri does well to anticipate his intentions.
The two fighters stay close to each other, pick up the pace and both unleash some good combinations.
After three rounds, the judges announce the interim scores, which show the hometown fighter in the lead.
Marchetti tries to step up the pace, producing some impressive changes of rhythm that allow him to land accurate straight punches to the body. However, the champion’s cleverly disguised right hand remains effective whenever he counters.
The fifth round is a continuous back-and-forth exchange. Both fighters come forward throwing combinations with both hands, increasing the intensity and power of their attacks. It is a fiercely contested round that draws plenty of appreciation from the crowd.
In the sixth round, the fighter from Lazio appears to be physically fading. Aware that he is behind on points, he keeps advancing, but in doing so takes risks and leaves himself exposed to the champion’s counter right hand. Sensing that his challenger is struggling, Guarnieri also begins to penetrate Marchetti’s guard with some fine uppercuts.
The round ends and both fighters return to their corners. Then, suddenly, Marchetti decides to retire.
Marchetti later explained that he had withdrawn from the fight because of a problem with his right shoulder, which apparently prevented him from continuing.
For his part, Guarnieri successfully defended his belt for the first time, displaying authority and confidence in his abilities and further consolidating his position in the welterweight division.
