The WBA reconsiders: it will review the decision to rank Jake Paul

After loud protests from boxers, journalists, and insiders from all over the world, the WBA has hinted at a possible U-turn on its decision to place former YouTuber Jake Paul in the 14th spot of its cruiserweight rankings.

The decision by Gilberto Mendoza’s federation — which we heavily criticized last Tuesday — had made Jake Paul eligible for a world title fight. According to WBA rules, a reigning champion, in the case of a voluntary title defense, is allowed to choose any challenger ranked in the top fifteen.

As revealed by the renowned American magazine The Ring on its social media channels, the widely criticized move may now be reconsidered. The WBA is expected to review its rankings at the upcoming European Convention, which will take place in Madrid from July 15 to 18, taking into account the widespread concerns that have emerged.

This doesn’t guarantee that the American showman will be removed from the top fifteen, but at least the issue will be brought back to the table.

We can only hope that, for once, common sense will prevail over business interests, and that Jake Paul’s ranking spot will be given to a more deserving and more capable fighter.
