“No one needs to fight alone.” This is the motto chosen by the friends and family of the late Ricky Hatton for the launch of the foundation bearing his name, which will focus on raising awareness, providing community support, and offering education for those struggling with mental health issues.

Just yesterday came the first confirmations of what had previously been only a grim suspicion. Former world champion in the super lightweight and welterweight divisions, Ricky Hatton, has left this world at the age of just 46, taking his own life. His body was found by his manager, who had gone to Ricky’s home after he failed to appear at a scheduled event.

In recent years, Hatton had spoken publicly about his battles with alcohol addiction and depression, admitting that he had previously attempted suicide. The situation seemed to have improved to the point that the former British boxer was even preparing for a sensational comeback in December. On September 12, just two days before his death, he had been with some family members who noticed nothing unusual about his behavior.

Now, those who loved him have decided to honor Ricky Hatton’s memory by creating a foundation dedicated to helping anyone who finds themselves in a similar psychological condition — those who need help and support to overcome their inner demons and find peace again.

Below is how the Ricky Hatton Foundation presents itself on its official website:

Ricky loved people, loved to talk, and above all, loved helping others. The Ricky Hatton Foundation will carry that spirit forward — supporting those facing their own fights with mental illness and ensuring that no one ever has to face those battles alone.

Our mission will be to:

Raise awareness of mental health challenges

Remove the stigma that prevents people from speaking up

Educate and support through community programmes, outreach, and practical resources

Offer direct support through talking therapies

Be there, in the corner of those struggling with their mental health, so they know that no one has to fight this alone

Sport will be at the heart of this work. Just as Ricky used boxing to inspire people, the Foundation will use sport — boxing, football, and beyond — as a powerful vehicle to bring people together, spark conversation and drive positive change. We thank everyone from the world of boxing and sport who have already reached out and offered their support.

You can register on the Foundation’s website to stay updated on its initiatives and programs (click here to visit the site). It is also possible to make a donation to help the Foundation pursue its mission through the dedicated “Just Giving” page (click here to donate). At the time of writing this article, a little over £9,000 had been raised — about 9% of the £100,000 target set as the goal.
