Moments of fear followed the conclusion of last Saturday’s bout between Filipino Pedro Taduran and Japan’s Ginjiro Shigeoka, which was contested for the IBF minimumweight world title in Osaka, Japan. Shigeoka, who lost via Split Decision, collapsed after the verdict was announced and was taken away on a stretcher.

Today, the first updates on his condition arrived, as Viva Promotions—the company managing Taduran’s career—published the following statement:

“According to the JBC (Japanese Boxing Commission), Japanese former IBF champion Ginjiro Shigeoka has suffered from an acute subdural hematoma and has already undergone a craniotomy.

“G. Shigeoka is still currently under observation in a private hospital in Osaka, Japan. The commission has already ruled that following the craniotomy, Shigeoka must retire from boxing.”

The two fighters had already met in July of last year, when Taduran won by stoppage in the ninth round. On that occasion as well, Shigeoka showed signs of discomfort after the fight and was taken to the hospital for evaluation. At the time, his medical condition was later deemed suitable for a return to the ring.

Boxe Punch wishes the Japanese boxer a full and speedy recovery.
