Ryan Garcia has been relatively quiet for a while, but yesterday the Californian boxer tried to regain the spotlight with some venomous comments about the superstar Terence Crawford. The latter is currently the WBA super welterweight world champion and is consistently ranked in the top three of all respectable P4P (pound-for-pound) rankings. However, as usual, Garcia showed no respect for his fellow countryman’s status. These were his words:
“Terence Crawford really hasn’t beat anybody other than Errol Spence who went through a car crash… Crawford ain’t like that. He’s an overhyped bum. I’m sorry, somebody had to say it. You’re an overhyped bum, you f***ing suck bro. You’re not entertaining, you’re boring as f*** Come see me in the ring if you think I’m talking s***.”
The challenge in the final part of the statement is clearly unrealistic in the short term, as Ryan Garcia is currently serving a one-year suspension for doping, following tests conducted in connection with his last fight against Devin Haney. In addition to having his victory revoked, the New York State Athletic Commission members ruled that Garcia must cease his competitive activity until next April and participate in a special anti-doping program.
“King Ry” is therefore likely attempting to draw attention in a period where boxing media are focused on other fighters. Time will tell if the Californian athlete can resolve his alcohol dependency issues and regain the mental stability needed to resume his career during the months he must spend away from the ring.
