Dario Sapone triumphs, Arianna Tonello settles for a draw

Yesterday was an electrifying Friday for boxing fans in Ferrara, thanks to the Ferrara Boxing Night organized by Promo Boxe Italia of Mario Loreni at the Bondi Arena. Two titles were on the line: the Italian super bantamweight championship between Dario Sapone and Matteo Petriccioli, and the women’s European lightweight title contested between Arianna Tonello and Natalie Polednikova. Sapone claimed the Italian title, while Tonello had to settle for a draw.

The bout for the national title started immediately at a high pace, with both fighters engaging right from the opening round without a real feeling-out phase. Petriccioli tried to close the distance, but Sapone did well to launch effective combinations and quickly move out of range of the counters.

The hometown fighter showed good footwork, slipping punches and countering quickly, controlling the distance, while Petriccioli struggled to get inside and land his shots, though he kept pressing forward relentlessly.

The Ligurian boxer did manage to land a solid right hand on a few occasions.

After eight rounds, the scorecards had Sapone ahead, and the situation didn’t change over the final two rounds: Dario Sapone became the new Italian super bantamweight champion by unanimous decision.

Respect goes to Petriccioli, a humble fighter who gave his all in every round. The Ligurian reached this title opportunity through determination and grit. Despite limitations in his footwork due to issues in his youth, he fought tooth and nail and, after the loss, stated that he will keep pushing to earn another title shot.

We will follow with interest the path of the fighter trained by coach Croce, who can now enjoy his well-deserved triumph.

Next up was the women’s European lightweight title bout between Italy’s Arianna Tonello and Czech champion Natalie Polednikova.

The Czech fighter had a clear reach advantage, while Tonello tried from the start to close the distance. It was a complicated fight for the Italian, who showed aggression but struggled to implement her game plan, as Polednikova consistently controlled the long range and moved effectively on her feet.

Tonello was unable to showcase her best boxing, while her opponent appeared crafty, using her experience in clinch situations before returning to manage the fight at her preferred distance. Tonello landed some good right hands, and both fighters appeared to be in excellent physical condition for the contest.

In the later rounds, Tonello seemed to have more energy and began landing heavy right hooks that troubled the Czech fighter.

Arianna appeared to have found in that right hook the key to breaking through her opponent’s guard, but Polednikova kept resorting to clinches before firing straight punches. In the end, the fight was ruled a draw, with scorecards reading 95-95, 97-93, and 95-95.

A bittersweet result for Tonello, who saw the European title slip away, but the Italian fighter showed heart and proved her worth against a very tough opponent. We hope she will have another chance in the future to achieve her big goal.
