Stevenson, Garcia and Haney Unimpressed by Benn’s Victory

At the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Conor Benn defeated Regis Prograis by a wide points decision, but his performance failed to impress everyone. Several top-level fighters voiced skepticism about the British puncher, who faced a naturally smaller opponent clearly past his prime and was unable to score a knockout. Among the world champions who expressed their disapproval were Shakur Stevenson, Ryan Garcia, and Devin Haney.

Here’s what Stevenson posted. Despite currently competing in the super lightweight division, he appears interested in a potential clash with Benn:

“If he makes it 12 rounds with me I’ll be disappointed in myself”.

Shakur therefore believes he could stop Benn inside the distance, despite the size disadvantage and the fact that power is not his primary weapon.

Ryan Garcia also seems open to facing Benn and posted the following:

“Mark my words, his corner or the ref stops my fight with Conor in the 6-7 rounds. I’m down GARCIA VS BENN Let’s do it!!!!!!”

Devin Haney’s response was shorter and more dismissive. Benn had mocked him ringside while Haney was fighting Brian Norman for the WBO welterweight title, pretending to fall asleep on camera to highlight the lack of excitement in the bout. “The Dream” simply wrote:

“Conor Benn stay away”

Most neutral experts and insiders who commented on Benn vs Prograis agreed that the winner’s performance was far from impressive. Benn’s future, however, may also depend on the weight class in which he ultimately settles.

At welterweight, there may still be some opportunities for him to compete for a title, whereas at super welterweight, the level of competition is so deep and fierce that Benn appears to be a second-tier fighter compared to the elite.
